2. TRAINING LOCATION: University of Massachusetts – Amherst.

3. COURSE INSTRUCTORS: Dr. Greg Harrell and Dr. Richard Jendrucko from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Dr. Harrell is the primary developer of the course materials for this course and for the BestPractices Steam End User Training (which he also teaches). Dr. Jendrucko is a past director of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Industrial Assessment Center (for more than 20 years). Rich is the co-developer of the Steam Specialist Qualification training, and he also teaches BestPractices Steam End User Training.

4. COURSE GOAL: The primary goal of the BestPractices Steam System Specialist Qualification Training course is to equip participants to be fluent in the effective and appropriate use of the BestPractices Steam Tool Suite, which includes: a) the Steam System Scoping Tool (SSST); b) the Steam System Assessment Tool (SSAT) version 2.0.0; c) the Steam System Survey Guide (primary reference text for the training); and d) 3E-Plus Insulation Appraisal software (overview only). The Standards of Knowledge for the training course are attached. This is a course designed for people with engineering backgrounds, knowledge of steam systems, and the ability to be comfortable using computer software tools.

5. COURSE OVERVIEW: The Steam System Specialist Qualification Training course will be 2-1/2 days long. The first two days of the course will cover the lesson materials. Numerous in-class problems will be worked and discussed so that class participants will understand the applicability and limitations of the BestPractices Steam Tools. On the third morning of the training, the Specialist Qualification exam will be offered. Class participants who pass this exam (85% exam grade or above) will be designated as BestPractices Steam Qualified Specialists, and their names and contact information will be listed on the U.S. DOE BestPractices web site.

6. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: It is a MANDATORY REQUIREMENT for participating in the Specialist Qualification training that you have the Steam System Scoping Tool (SSST), Steam System Assessment Tool (SSAT) version 2.0.0, and 3E-Plus software loaded and operational on a laptop computer that you bring with you to the training.

7. COURSE PREREQUISITES: We STRONGLY recommend that class participants complete the Course "Prerequisite Study Guide" before attending the class. The BestPractices Steam Specialist Qualification training is an intense course with a challenging exam; we want to provide the maximum assistance to each attendee to help him/her to successfully learn the course materials. The purpose of this Study Guide is to provide an indicator of the prerequisite skill levels necessary to successfully complete the Specialist Qualification training. Completion of this Study Guide will also provide attendees with valuable pre-class experience in using the BestPractices Steam Tools. Attachments to this email include: Course Prerequisite Study Guide; Steam System Assessment Tool Users Guide; and the Steam System Survey Guide. You will need to use the Survey Guide to solve some of the problems in the Prerequisite Study Guide.

8. COST: The program cost is $150 and includes breakfast on all three days, lunch on days 1 and 2, campus parking, all course materials and pre-conference materials. There are several reasonably priced hotels in the area (<$100/night) and we can help you find one.

9. REGISTRATION: Please register on-line at the MAEEP web site www.maeep.org/events/steamqs05.htm, you will receive all the pre-conference materials by email soon after. A pre-conference web cast is scheduled for the week prior to the training to pre-qualify registrants for the exam. Sign up soon because seats are limited.
