Sustainable Cities Workshop ECLAC/CEPAL, 7-9, 2006 August/Agosto.
Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the most urbanized regions in the world, with its population highly concentrated in its largest cities. These cities are centres of cultural, technological and economic diffusion, having strong impacts on the well-being of millions, even beyond their urban limits.
The elaboration of strategies of more sustainable urban development requires improved knowledgeand information relating the complexities of urban systems. Currently these systems, with alltheir potential and non-linear interdependencies, are far from being understood. The challenges for research and policy design depend on an increasing understanding of the urban system and the identification of sustainable urban development strategies.
This workshop creates a space for responding to these challenges, through dialogue between scientists and stakeholders working in fields related to urban and regional development. The objective is to promote joint activities for the definition of strategies and policies capable of addressing the issue of urban sustainability.
