GIS Cloud Mobile App for Data Collection Enables Real Time Access to Data from Anywhere

September 14, 2011

Through GIS Cloud, mobile application data collected off-site is available to users immediately, regardless of their location. With just an Internet connection GIS Cloud users can easily access, publish or share their data in real time, as it's being collected. More possibilities can be realized through use of the available APIs. Communication with the application, sending and retrieving of data is performed through GIS Cloud's REST API.

London - GIS Cloud, the cloud based geographic information system (GIS) for visualization, sharing and collaboration of geo data online, announced on their blog that users of their application and platform have a new system for mobile data collection available. The new application targets Android based smartphones, with iOs support coming soon.

Through GIS Cloud, mobile application data collected off-site is available to users immediately, regardless of their location. With just an Internet connection GIS Cloud users can easily access, publish or share their data in real time, as it’s being collected. More possibilities can be realized through use of the available APIs. Communication with the application, sending and retrieving of data is performed through GIS Cloud’s REST API. This way all data collected with the smarphone application is sent directly to a layer in GIS Cloud.

GIS Cloud’s main differentiating characteristic is its vector visualization engine, based on the Adobe Flash platform. The map engine is unique because it provides a full desktop-like GIS experience in any browser. This improves usability, appearance, mapping experience in a way that other map engines (using raster technology) cannot. The wide range of supported vector and raster file and database formats make it possible to use GIS Cloud alongside other GIS solutions (on the desktop and on the web).

The cloud provides a reliable, secure and highly available infrastructure which is under constant supervision and management from our team. Finally you can focus more on GIS and less on patching, tuning, upgrading and updating various pieces of GIS software and hardware.

Practical use of the application for mobile data collection is presented through a use case, the road maintenance service in the City of Zagreb, with a metropolitan area with a population of over 1 million.
